From Cult Survivor to Published Author and Advocate

Michelle Stewart spent her childhood and early adulthood trapped within the confining walls of cults and extreme religious groups. Her journey from survivor to advocate and author offers hope to others with similar experiences while shedding light on the often-hidden dangers of religious extremism.

The Journey Behind "Judas Girl"

Michelle’s debut memoir, “Judas Girl: My Father, Four Cults & How I Escaped Them All,” chronicles her harrowing experiences beginning at age seven when her father claimed divine revelation. This pivotal moment launched the family into a nomadic existence, moving from one religious cult to another before settling in an isolated, off-the-grid enclave known as “The Community,” founded by a former Amish bishop with evangelical aspirations.

Within this controlled environment, Michelle witnessed disturbing truths while her father’s mental health deteriorated, leading to episodes of unconsciousness and self-proclamations of prophetic status. When his declarations challenged The Community’s leadership, tensions escalated, forcing a young Michelle to make impossible choices between faith and family—decisions that would ultimately brand her as a “Judas.”

“Writing ‘Judas Girl’ was both the hardest and most healing journey of my life. By sharing my story, I hope to reach others who feel trapped and show them that escape and healing are possible.”

Life Today

Today, Michelle is a dedicated activist helping others who have escaped similar backgrounds. Her mission extends beyond her personal story to raising awareness about the dangers extreme religious environments pose, particularly to children whose development and worldview are profoundly shaped by such experiences.

Through speaking engagements, support groups, and educational initiatives, Michelle works tirelessly to help survivors rebuild their lives while advocating for greater public understanding of religious trauma and coercive control.

After years of healing and reclaiming her identity, Michelle now resides in Colorado with her family and three beloved dogs. Her home in the mountains provides the peace and freedom she sought throughout her childhood—a stark contrast to the isolation and control she once experienced.
